Often called the museum city, Fez is a virtual window into Moroccan history. With 143 mosques, original ramparts, antique médersas, and palaces, Fez has succeeded in protecting its imperial character throughout the centuries. Fassie architecture is rich and reflects the print of each of the reigning dynasties.

One of the most important Islamic cities, and the most important oriental city in Morocco, Fez was founded in 809 by Moulay Idriss II and is actually composed of three cities in one, Fez el J’did, Fez el Bali and the “nouvelle ville” or the new city. Fez attracts famous artists and well established businesses.

The medina of the ancient city, Fez el Bali, is one of the largest medieval cities in the world. Artisan workshops in the medina are as active today as 100 years ago, and strongly contribute to the city’s industrial economy. Trades such as metal and leather working, ceramics, silk, tapestries, and sculpting are still practiced in these workshops. Original ramparts still protect the ancient city and its’ 9000 passageways and narrow streets. As in Marrakech, many historical monuments are hidden in the medina.

Fez el J’did also houses many historical monuments and is much easier to navigate than the medina. The old Jewish quarter and the synagogue are found in Fez el J’did and you can see many objects that were abandoned by the Jews during the exodus as well as pretty extensive photo exposition. The royal palace and its’ famous gardens are also located in this part of the city.

The “nouvelle ville” of Fez, or the new city, provides a startling contrast with Fès el Bali. Wide and elegant avenues are lined with numerous cafés and restaurants. The modern aspect of the new city highlights the economic differences of the suburbs and the city center.
