Fez travel guide - monuments

reservations city map guide

The number of monuments in Fez is overwhelming. In order to see everything you would need to spend a very long time in the city. Depending on the length of your stay, your best bet is to choose several monuments you would really like to see and try to stay focused. fes riad guide - monuments

As in Marrakech, the majority of monuments are located in the medina, however, some really incredible monuments are located just outside of the walls and should not be written off. As many of the old buildings are still being used by the Fassies, their conservation is well maintained and remains a priority.

Nejjarine Square Bab Boujloud Borj Sud
Borj Nord Mérinides Tombs Mellah
Seffarine medersa Andalous mosque dar El Magana
Quarouiyine mosque Dar Batha Zaouia
Bou Inania medersa Attarine medersa Fontains

This quarter is occupied by the woodworkers. A beautiful fountain in zellige and sculpted wood decorates the central plaza. The Fendag En Nejjarine Museum is located here in an ancient Foundouk (bed and breakfast) and they exhibit wood works.

Bab Boujloud
This door/gateway should not be missed! Constructed in 1913 it served as the principal accessway to the medina.

Borj Sud
The Arms Museum occupies this fortress than was constructed by the Sultan Ahmed El Mansour Dehbi. Panoramic views of Fez El Bali.

Borj Nord top of page guide
Another arms museum (more recent than the collection at Borj Sud). Good collection of arms dating from prehistoric times to today.

Mérinides Tombs
Situated to the North of the medina, the majority of the tombs date from the 14th century.

Mellah
Ancient Jewish quarter. Unfortunately there are not many traces of the old community.

Seffarine Medersa
Dating back to 1255, it is decorated with a minaret and there are excellent views of the Al Akhawayn from the terrace.

Andalous Mosque
Founded in 859, a superb example of Almohades architecture.

Dar El Magana top of page guide
A hydraulic clock decorated in wood and sculptured plaster.

Quarouiyine Mosque
The oldest and most renowned university of the Islamic Arab world is the Quarouiyine. Founded in 862 by the Kairouanais refugies, the university can welcome up to 20 000 students. Unfortunately, as in many of Moroccan monuments, non Muslims may not enter, however, you can get some great views of the interior courtyards through one of the 14 gate doors. The library houses more than 30 000 written pieces.

Dar Batha
This riad was constructed by the Sultan Moulay El Hassan. Today, the riad houses the Dar Batha Musueum that has great expositions of traditional Fassie art.

Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II
Dedicated to the patron saint of Fez, the Zaouia is located between the Nejjarine square and the Attarine souk .

Medersa Bou Inania
The medersa Bou Inania is the most famous in Fez. Founded in 1350 by the Merinidian Sultan Abou Inane, this Islamic university is a real treasure of Meridinian art. The elegant detail seen in the architecture, mosaic wall designs and sculpted ceilings is amazing and should not be missed if you have the time to visit.

Medersa Attarine top of page guide
This Koranic school was founded by the Merinide Sultan Abou Said in the 14th century. The medersa is one of the most famous works of Merinidian art. The detail in the decoration is incredible. Make sure to look closely at the detail in the ceilings and zellige. The views of the Al Akhawayn and the souks from the terrace is magnificent.

Fountains and water networks
Fez has about 3500 fountains, many of which are artistic wonders in the detail seen in the mosaic designs. The water network is one of the oldest in the arab countries and is the most complex in Morocco.
